“Psychograms of a positivist consumer society that tries to escape its own mortality”
Katharina Arndt (*1981) lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Barcelona. Sie hat bildende Kunst an der HBK Braunschweig studiert und ist Meisterschülerin von Prof. Jon Armleder. Leuchtende Slogans, funkelnder Strass und glänzende Lackfolie: In ihren Arbeiten zählt die anziehende Oberfläche als treffendstes Sinnbild für das Leben im digitalen Zeitalter. In ihren Werken überspitzt und ironisiert die Künstlerin die zeitgenössische Massenkonsum-Ästhetik einer dekadenten Überflussgesellschaft und bringt die Dinge an die strahlende Oberfläche, die es im Kaufrausch zu verdrängen gilt, unsere Sorgen und Ängste, vor allem die vor der eigenen Vergänglichkeit.
Katharina Arndt, 1981, lives and works in Berlin and Barcelona. She studied at Braunschweig school of art and achieved her Master by Jon Armleder. Luminous slogans, sparkling rhinestones and shiny lacquer fabric: in her work, the alluring surface is a striking symbol of life in the digital age. The artist exaggerates and ironizes the contemporary mass consumerist aesthetic of a decadent, abundant society. She brings things to the shining surface which are to be suppressed by binge buying, i.e. our worries and fears, especially those of our own mortality. The symbol for this is the topic ’surface‘ – social, cultural, material. In the hyperreal and at the same time immaterial online world, only visual appearance matters—that of ourselves and the products we should buy.
