Sohorab Rabbey (geb. 1994 in Dhaka, BD) beschäftigt sich mit der Befragung der künstlerischen Form und ihrer Ontologie. Die räumliche Spannung zwischen Kontext [hi(s)tory], Erinnerung, Materialien und ihren physischen Eigenschaften, treibt seine künstlerische Auseinandersetzung voran. Oft entstehen dabei ortsspezifische Skulpturen oder Installationen im öffentlichen Raum. Auf diese Weise wird eine zerebrale und sensorische Raumerfahrung im Werk angestrebt. Seit er als studentischer Emigrant von Bangladesch nach Deutschland gezogen ist, fokussiert Sohorab sich auf seine Heimatregion Ganges Delta und ihre geopolitischen, topografischen und kulturellen Veränderungen. Dieses empfindliche Gezeitenbecken und Mangroven-Ökosystem prägt sein Untersuchungsfeld, ein komplexes postkoloniales geologisches Terrain, das eine große Minderheit beherbergt, welche durch den Anthropozentrismus – soziologisch, wirtschaftlich und ökologisch – gefährdet ist. Nach seinem BFA-Abschluss an der HFBK Hamburg absolviert Sohorab nun einen kombinierten MFA an der HFBK Hamburg und Goldsmiths, London. Derzeit ist er Artist in Residence im Künstlerhaus Vorwerk-Stift in Hamburg, DE.
Sohorab Rabbey’s (b.1994 in Dhaka, BD) practice evolves through questioning the form of art and its ontology. The tension between context [hi(s)tory], memory, materials and their physical qualities performing in the space navigates his artistic Junctures. Often site-specific sculptures and installations in the public space occur. This way a cerebral and sensory spatial experience is desired in the piece. After moving from Bangladesh to Germany as a student émigré, he became interested in channeling the geo-politics, topographic and ethnocultural transformation of the River Delta region of South Asia. This delicate tidal basin and mangrove ecosystem shaped his field of scrutiny, which is a complex postcolonial geological terrain that holds a vast marginalised population, endangered by anthropocentrism- sociologically, economically and ecologically. After his BFA from HFBK Hamburg, Sohorab is now pursuing a joint MFA in HFBK Hamburg and Goldsmiths, London. He is currently an Artist in residence at künstlerhaus Vorwerk-Stift in Hamburg, GE.
